DESCRIPTION:This one-day free seminar is underwritten by Blue Poppy Enterprises\, one of the earliest publishers of TCM materials and also a needle & herb supply company with offices in Portland\, OR and Torrance\, CA. Blue Poppy is also a leading provider of online continuing education. \nBackground to the class: Japanese Meridian Therapy stands alone in the world of acupuncture styles with its uniquely gentle assessments and treatment strategies and techniques. Many of the practitioners of Japanese Meridian Therapy (JMT) are blind\, and this has served to lend an amazingly gentle flavor to its assessments and treatments\, since the palpatory sensitivity of the blind is so heightened. It is a fascinating part of the global world of acupuncture\, a bit like a rare animal. \nIn this one-day exploration of gentle medicine Bob Quinn will cover the Nan Jing\, Chapter 16 description of 5E abdominal assessment\, 5E forearm assessment\, and 6 position pulse diagnosis. He will also teach how to use a teishin (Chinese: tizhen/dizhen)\, one of the nine classical needles described in Ling Shu\, Chapter 1. By the end of the day participants will be able to develop a coherent understanding of their patients’ 5E imbalances and will have the rudiments of treatment to be able to address their imbalances. \nAbout the Instructor: Bob Quinn\, DAOM\, Lac. is a full-time Associate Professor in the School of Classical Chinese Medicine at the National University of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland\, OR. There he supervises in the student clinic and teaches courses in Japanese acupuncture and bodywork. He teaches seminars around the US and will be leaving soon to teach in three European countries. Bob is also a regular contributor to the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine. At Blue Poppy he publishes a twice a month blog that goes out in their newsletter. A sampling of past blogs can be accessed at the Blue Poppy website. His passion is finding ways to work gently and still deliver effective treatment. In his private practice he sees a variety of conditions but is especially known for effective treatment of chronic Lyme disease and common pediatric complaints. He is also known for his efforts to reintroduce dreamwork into the practice of Chinese Medicine (see Ling Shu\, Chapter 43). \nWho Should Attend? This class is open to all levels\, since no needling will be taught. The teishin is a non-insertive tool. In fact\, it should be pointed out that 2 of the 9 classical needles are non-insertive tools\, which is to make the point that this sort of gentle work is really a part of Classical Chinese Medicine. \nVenue: This class will be held at the Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine on Sunday\, February 9\, 2020. Class is 9-5 with a 90 minute lunch break. Please accept our apologies\, and keep your eye on our calendar for upcoming events.\nThank you for your interest and understanding.\nASAOM\n“Always attend to the stomach Qi!”  — Master Kiyoshi Nagano\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaster Kiyoshi Nagano was a blind acupuncturist from Japan\, who utilized his study of western medicine and the classics of acupuncture to develop his own style of treatment. Alive and vibrant during his lifetime from the mid-to-late 20th century\, his practice and techniques rested outside most of the established treatment constructs of Japan. His legacy and unique approach lives on his closest students: those who loved and studied with the Master. \n15 CEUs NCCAOM\nSee event flyers here:\nONE    TWO \nRegistration may be done in-person\, by phone | email\, or online.\n  \nEvent Info:\nMaster Nagano utilized a palpatory method in treatment. Through applying pressure in specific areas\, tightness and stagnation in tissue was determined\, juxtaposed with levels of discomfort (pain) in the patient\, and used to generate approaches for treating many conditions. \n  \nNagano-Style Acupuncture:\nPalpation is addressed and used\, systematically\, throughout a treatment. Diagnosis and treatment are in equal consideration as the practitioner gains understanding and is guided to the best angle\, depth\, and pattern for treatment/needling. The directives followed are immediate changes of the pulse\, breath\, and reflexive actions observed in the patient’s body during their release of pain. Treating in accordance to the body’s response confirms the body’s positive acceptance of the treatment\, and as the body is the guide\, it is advantageous for its acceptance of the healing. \nAllowing the body’s reactions (pulse\, breath\, reflex) to guide treatment flow is extremely advantageous when the symptoms being treated are not directly observable. Constant observation of the body through treatment also helps to ensure the body is not treated too heavily in a single session. \nAs the attributed quote above suggests\, Master Nagano central approach/teaching was to “Always attend to the Stomach Qi.” \nPostnatal Qi\, or Stomach Qi\, swells in accordance to the energy we invite into our body. There are many ways to bring energy in: breath\, food\, drink\, experiences\, emotions\, actions. To be mindful of Postnatal Qi we must be aware of how we invite our energy in\, and the techniques we employ in processing it. Doing this\, can help ensure our body has a healthy approach and adequate resources to process energy (Qi) in a way that enhances growth\, repair\, and healing. If we are present with our body’s processing of energy\, and our demand upon it\, we can avoid demand on the finite levels of Qi innate to us. i.e. Our body can engage the healing process alive within it\, without taxing its form. \n \nMaster Tsuyoshi Shimamura demonstrating with Seishiro Hokozano (his interpreter) – bios listed below \n\n\n\nTsuyoshi Shimamura\, LAc (Japan)\nShimamura sensei obtained licensure as an Acupuncturist and Moxibustionist in Japan in 1995 after completing studies at Meiji Acupuncture and Moxibustion College. He was fortunate to undertake a live-in apprenticeship with Master Nagano during the final years of Master Nagano’s life\, living and working with him between 1997 and 2000 as his closest apprentice. Shimamura sensei not only inherited a vast amount of Master Nagano’s teachings\, techniques and theories\, but also gained an important insight into his character.​ \nTsuyoshi Shimamura is a member of the Japan Acupuncturist Association\, and has also published articles and DVDs for Ido-No-Nippon. Since 2006\, Shimamura sensei has been teaching seminars on the acupuncture and diagnostic methods he learned during his time with Master Nagano\, and has also taught Shiatsu\, physical therapy\, Bone-Setting and cosmetic applications in Japan. Shimamura sensei currently develops what he has learned with Master Nagano personally during their time together\, and what he has learned from Master Acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto. As a result Shimamura sensei focuses on teaching openly and passionately\, that which he learned directly from Master Nagano and Kiiko Matsumoto. Shimamura sensei has impressed international students with his clarity and depth of understanding\, his mindful presence\, and his commitment to sharing Master Nagano’s legacy. He  runs clinics in Hiroshima and Ooita\, Japan\, and holds a 1st Degree Black-Belt in Judo. \nSeishiro Hokazono LAc (Shimamura’s Interpreter)\nBorn and raised in Japan\, and now a citizen of the US\, Seishiro graduated from the Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, and undertook further studies in Meridian-style Acupuncture and Moxibustion with Aizawa Sensei in Tokyo\, Japan from 2006-2007. Seishiro then studied modified KSA and Integrated Synergy Therapeutics under Nakano Sensei in 2008 in Las Cruces\, New Mexico. From 2008 onwards Seishiro developed very sound knowledge and skills in Kiiko Style Acupuncture. \nHe is a student of Aizawa sensei of Keiraku Chiryo Gakkai\, a student of Dr. Nakano of Integrative Synergy Therapeutic (IST)\, and now a follower of Shimamura sensei.  He edited an IST book for Dr. Nakano in 2013.  He has assisted both Dr. Nakano and Shimamura sensei on many seminar projects.  He also gives talk to community on acupuncture for pain and stress since 2012. Due to his exceptional linguistic skills in Japanese and English and experience with interpreting specific to acupuncture\, Seishiro has been selected as interpreter to Mr Shimamura\, to assist English speaking students to learn Master Nagano’s Acupuncture techniques\, diagnosis and theory through Mr Shimamura. Seishiro is in full-time practice in Albany\, Oregon\, and also holds a 1st Degree Black-Belt in Judo. \nSpaces for this seminar/class are limited to 30 for adequate instruction to be maintained.
